August Issue: Turnover – ‘Peripheral Vision’

Updated: Feb 20

Peripheral Vision is the second studio album by the Virginia-based band, Turnover, who formed back in 2009. Released in 2015 and working alongside Magnolia producer Will Yip (Title Fight, Circa Survive), Peripheral Vision was welcomed with great acclaim and showed a band maturing in their musical journey.

This album has been classed as: “an ethereal, reverb-drenched soundscape blending elements of hazy dream pop and the delicate emo rock of yesteryear”. In other words, this is the perfect mix of emo, shoegaze and pop-punk sounds, with some unforgettable guitar melodies thrown in for good measure. This sound is the reason we’ve chosen to feature this album as our curated choice for August.

Peripheral Vision had a shift in sound in comparison with their first studio album, Magnolia. According to singer/guitarist Austin Getz, this was completely unintentional. Getz admits that he may have been influenced by the music that he was surrounding himself with at the time – mainly that from the 80s and late 70s – but credited the sound to jam sessions with the now ex-guitarist, Eric Soucy and using “whatever comes out, comes out”. One of the most notable sounds on the album is the result of a Superego guitar pedal. This beauty provided the ambient humming heard throughout the album and made "everything sound a lot bigger than it really is”.

Interestingly, the apparent “overall concept of the album is that the narrator has a mental illness (most likely depression) and it goes through the various stages of his relationship with his girlfriend, who is being talked about in this song. Eventually, he succumbs to his mental illness and forces himself to break up with his girlfriend”. The lyrics of this album will either resonate or evoke feelings, and at the very least, the catchy sound will provide a background soundtrack that pulls you in when you least expect it.

The first song I ever stumbled across from Turnover was Hello Euphoria, which some consider being that song that often gets overlooked in favour of the other tracks that dominate this album. But to me, this song is so perfect. I remember having it on a loop for days before I even began to listen to the whole album, it was the song I needed to hear at that exact moment in my life. When I eventually did unloop myself from Hello Euphoria, Peripheral Vision blew me away.

We hope you love this curated choice as much as we do, and did we mention this is the 'magenta' coloured pressing?
