If there was ever an album that evoked the feelings of teen angst and skinny jeans, then Fall Out Boy’s first studio album, Take This to Your Grave is the winner.
At Runout Record Club we vow to bring you the best of the best when it comes to our curated choices. And this month is no exception. This month’s album has finally been reissued for its 25th anniversary – and if that wasn’t enough – this is a limited edition silver pressing! Fans of the album will know what a big deal this reissue is. Apart from the incredibly hard-to-find first release, we had to buy the archive boxset just to own this album on Vinyl… until now! The year was 2003. I walked into my local independent music shop and there in the ‘Alt Rock’ section stood this particular album. Four guys with dyed black hair, converse and sullen looks on their faces donned the cover and I knew I was buying whatever message this band was selling. I still own this album on CD to this day. This iconic album defined a whole generation with songs like ‘Chicago Is So Two Years Ago’, ‘The Pros and Cons of Breathing’, ‘Where Is Your Boy’, ‘Grand Theft Autumn’, and ‘The Patron Saint Of Liars And Fakes’. Chicago’s Fall Out Boy was originally signed to Island Records. The label employed an unusual strategy that allowed them to sign with independent label Fueled by Ramen for their debut, and later move to Island for their second album. Sean O'Keefe had helped with the original demo, and they returned to Wisconsin to record the bulk of their first album with him while living on a stranger's floor for part of the time. In just nine days, Fall Out Boy recorded seven songs and then brought them together with the additional three from the original demo, and thus, ‘Take This to Your Grave’ was born.
Rolling Stone said that Take This to Your Grave “ushered in a whole new, genre-blurring scene, in which heavy riffs and a screamo aesthetic mingled with old-fashioned teen heartbreak.” If you missed this debut album, perhaps discovering Fall Out Boy later, you’d be forgiven. For the longest time, this album seemed to stand in the dark shadows of the band’s archives. It wasn’t available on Spotify for ages and most people didn’t seem to realise the album existed. But like this reissue, Take That To Your Grave has been thrust into the spotlight! This album set Fall Out Boy up for everything they were to become; “a dedicated, brave, sometimes cringe band who have outsold and outlived nearly everyone from their scene while also testing the limits of what pop-punk can do”.
